Best for long-battery trail and multisport Suunto is the strongest non-Garmin option if battery life is what you are buying. Testers measured 55 to 60 hours of dual-band GPS on the Race 2 and 66 hours on the Vertical 2, with offline maps and sapphire glass from $349 up. If you depend on third-party training plans, a Garmin suits you better.
How we made this estimate
We compiled 11 sources published between September 2025 and October 2026: independent expert tests from DC Rainmaker, the5krunner, OutdoorGearLab, Tom's Guide, GearJunkie, Wareable and gadgetsandwearables; dive-specific reviews from Scuba Diving and DiveIn; 868 verified-buyer ratings on Trustpilot; and Suunto's own US shipping, returns, warranty and AI Coach pages. We read the policies and compared the price and battery claims against measured results. We did not test these watches ourselves, so every experiential claim below is attributed to the source that made it.
What Suunto actually sells
Suunto is a Finnish precision-instrument company founded in 1936, when Tuomas Vohlonen patented the liquid-filled compass. It sat inside Amer Sports from 1999 until the Chinese wearables firm Liesheng acquired it in May 2022.
Operations stayed in Vantaa, Finland. Suunto employs more than 300 people and sells into over 100 countries.
The US store runs six categories: sports watches, dive products, headphones, compasses, accessories and apparel. The watch lineup currently lists the Run 2, Race 2, Race 3S, Vertical 2 and the Ocean dive computer, alongside older Race, Core and 9 Peak Pro models. Every watch above the entry tier ships with offline maps, dual-band GPS and a sapphire lens.
What you pay, model by model
Suunto now sells three AMOLED sports watches with offline maps, and the differences between them are mostly battery, screen size and which software extras are switched on. The Race 3S arrived on 15 October 2026 at $599, which the5krunner noted is a jump from the $349 Race S it follows.
| Model | US price | Dual-band GPS | Screen | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Run 2 | From $349 | 24 hours | 1.32in AMOLED, 2,000 nits | Roads and shorter trails, lowest-price maps |
| Race 2 | From $499 | 55 hours | 1.5in AMOLED | Triathlon and the most mature multisport set |
| Race 3S | $599 | 38 hours | 1.32in AMOLED, 56g titanium | Long trail races on a smaller wrist |
| Vertical 2 | $599 steel / $699 titanium | 65 hours | 1.5in AMOLED, LED flashlight | Multi-day routes and expeditions |
| Ocean | $899 | 60 hours in dive mode | Colour touchscreen | Divers who want one watch for both |
Suunto charges $12 shipping on US orders below $50 and ships free above it, with delivery quoted at three to eight days depending on the area. Orders leave Monday to Friday, and customers in Hawaii and Alaska cover their own shipping cost.
The Run 2 is the one model with features deliberately left out. the5krunner found it cannot reach the SuuntoPlus store, so apps such as Varia radar and treadmill link are unavailable, and it carries 35 sport modes against more than 100 on the Race 3S.
What testers consistently find
Three things come up in nearly every independent test. Battery life on an AMOLED screen is the first and the least disputed.
the5krunner measured 55 to 60 hours of actual multi-band GPS use on the Race 2 against a 55-hour claim, and 12 to 14 days between charges in daily wear. Published Vertical 2 testing reached a similar conclusion, returning 66 hours of continuous GPS against a 65-hour rating. Suunto dropped the solar panel the first Vertical carried and still matched its GNSS figure.
Optical heart rate is the second. DC Rainmaker described the Race 3S sensor as a clear improvement on earlier Suunto models, holding accuracy across steep descents and gravel riding with discrepancies of only three to five beats per minute in limited sections.
The third is the app's pricing. Tom's Guide pointed out that the Suunto app has no paid tier at a moment when Garmin Connect+ and Polar's fitness program both charge for features owners once expected to be included. Suunto AI Coach is the exception: Race 3S buyers who activate before 31 December 2026 get three months free, and paid plans start from January 2027 at a price Suunto has not yet published.
| Source | Verdict or score | Published |
|---|---|---|
| OutdoorGearLab | Race 2: 82/100 — accuracy 9.0, wearability 9.0, battery 6.5 | 2026 |
| DC Rainmaker | Race 3S: accuracy strong, price hard to justify against the Race 2 | October 2026 |
| the5krunner | Buy by use case: Run 2 for roads, Race 2 for triathlon, Race 3S for long trail | October 2026 |
| Tom's Guide | Race 2: an affordable Garmin rival for keen athletes | 2026 |
| GearJunkie | Vertical 2: the AMOLED watch with all-weekend stamina | 2025 |
| Wareable | Race 2: an impressive evolution | 2026 |
| Trustpilot | Direct store: 1.7/5 from 868 reviews | October 2026 |
Where the test results split
GPS accuracy is the one dimension where named testers genuinely disagree, and the gap is worth understanding before you buy.
On the5krunner's standard 10-mile accuracy test the Race 2 scored 81 per cent, behind the Garmin Forerunner 970 at 92 per cent and behind the original Race at 87 per cent. Other published tests put the Race 2 on par with the best multi-band watches available, with the recorded track holding to the route across 95 to 98 per cent of its length.
DC Rainmaker's Race 3S testing found drift typically under five metres on open terrain, with the degradation in downtown areas that every watch in the class shows. The reading that reconciles these results: Suunto's multi-band tracking is dependable on open ground and competitive on trails, and it is not the most accurate watch in dense city blocks.
Display brightness splits reviewers the same way. Suunto's 2,000-nit panels read well in most conditions, and DC Rainmaker noted they sit below the 3,000 to 3,500-nit screens some rivals now ship.
What works and what to check
What works well
- Battery life leads the AMOLED field. Independent testers measured 55 to 60 hours of dual-band GPS on the Race 2 and 66 hours on the Vertical 2.
- Heart-rate accuracy has improved. DC Rainmaker rated the Race 3S sensor a clear step up, with three to five bpm gaps in limited sections only.
- Offline maps, dual-band GPS and a sapphire lens come in at $349 and up, per the5krunner's model comparison.
- The Suunto app has no paid tier, which Tom's Guide contrasted directly with Garmin and Polar's paid programs.
- Policy terms are clear: free shipping over $50, free returns within 30 days of delivery, and a two-year warranty on watches and dive computers serviceable at any authorised centre worldwide.
What to know before you buy
- The Race 3S lists at $599 while the Race 2 sits at $499 with longer measured GPS battery. Compare the two directly rather than assuming the newer model is the better buy.
- Screens run 2,000 nits, below some rivals. Check one in direct sunlight if you train at midday.
- Third-party training-plan import is limited and the app sync can be slow. Confirm your coaching platform is supported before you commit.
- Suunto AI Coach moves to paid plans from January 2027 and the price is not yet published. Budget for it only once Suunto announces the figure.
- The direct store holds 1.7 out of 5 across 868 Trustpilot ratings, where response times are the most common theme. Register the warranty, keep your order confirmation, and compare an authorised retailer if you want a local returns desk.
Who Suunto suits best
Suunto fits the buyer whose limiting factor is charge time. Ultra runners, multi-day hikers, expedition walkers and anyone who resents a mid-race top-up get more GPS hours per AMOLED screen here than from any rival at the same price.
It also fits divers who want one device. The Ocean is rated to 60m dive depth and 100m water resistance, runs Air, Nitrox, Multigas and Freedive modes, and carries 95-plus sport modes for the days you are not in the water.
An alternative may fit better if your training lives inside a third-party platform, if you want music, contactless payments and a full smartwatch app store, or if you would rather buy from a retailer whose returns desk you can walk into.
Better picks for some buyers
Garmin Forerunner 970. Prefer it when third-party integration matters. Garmin Connect carries mature analytics, importable training plans and the Connect IQ store, and it scored 92 per cent on the same 10-mile accuracy test where the Race 2 scored 81.
Coros. Prefer it in the mid and entry tiers. Comparison write-ups through 2026 credit Coros with fast feature development and more specification for similar money, which makes it the direct alternative to the Run 2 and Race 2.
Polar. Prefer it for coaching depth and lab-grade physiology. Check the current cost of its fitness program first, since Tom's Guide flagged it alongside Garmin as a brand now charging for previously included features.
Suunto questions people ask
Is Suunto still a Finnish company?
It is Finnish in origin and operation, and Chinese-owned. Suunto was founded in Finland in 1936 and acquired by the Chinese wearables firm Liesheng from Amer Sports in May 2022. Operations continue to run from Vantaa, Finland, with more than 300 employees.
What is Suunto's return policy?
You can return an item within 30 days of receiving it, provided the product is unused and in its original, undamaged packaging. Returns within that window are free, and the return platform prints your label directly. Customers in Hawaii and Alaska pay their own return shipping, and that fee is not refunded.
How long is the Suunto warranty?
Two years from the date of original retail purchase for watches, smart watches and dive computers. The International Limited Warranty can be claimed at any Suunto authorised service centre worldwide. Suunto states it processes repair requests within 24 hours and returns completed repairs within 10 business days.
Which Suunto watch has the best battery life?
The Vertical 2, rated at 65 hours of all-systems multi-band GPS and up to 20 days in smartwatch mode. GearJunkie's continuous-GPS testing measured 66 hours. The Race 2 is next at 55 hours of dual-band GPS and 18 days in smartwatch mode.
Is the Suunto Race 3S worth $599?
It depends on what you need from it. DC Rainmaker judged the accuracy strong and the price hard to justify given the incremental gains, since the $499 Race 2 records 55 hours of dual-band GPS against the Race 3S's 38. The Race 3S earns its premium on weight and size: 56g of titanium in a 46mm case, which suits smaller wrists and long trail races.
Does Suunto charge a subscription?
The Suunto app itself has no paid tier. Suunto AI Coach is the one paid product: three months come free with Race 3S activations before 31 December 2026, and paid plans begin in January 2027 at a price Suunto has not published.
Bottom line
Our compiled estimate is 7.8 out of 10, and our confidence in it is reasonably high for the hardware and lower for the ownership experience. Eleven sources agree closely on battery life, display quality and the recent heart-rate improvement, which is where the score is earned. They agree less on GPS accuracy in dense cities and on whether the Race 3S justifies its $599 price next to the $499 Race 2.
If battery hours per dollar is your deciding factor, the Race 2 is the pick in this lineup and Suunto is the brand to compare against Garmin. Check the current price before you order, since the lineup changed in October 2026 and the older models are the ones that move.
