ShutEye is a good fit if you sleep alone and want snoring and sleep-stage data without buying a wearable. Start on the 7-night trial, and subscribe through the App Store or Google Play so the renewal stays in your own device settings. Sleep Cycle is worth comparing if you mainly want a smart alarm.
How we made this estimate
Compiled from six named sources, read between 12 and 17 October 2026: Apple's App Store listing (star rating and the full in-app purchase price list), the Google Play listing, Trustpilot, an expert review from Mattress Clarity updated 16 September 2026, AppRundown's sleep-tracker ranking updated 15 July 2026, and ShutEye's own FAQ and Money-Back Policy.
We did not test the app ourselves. Every claim about what using ShutEye is like is attributed to the source that reported it, and every price comes from a merchant-controlled listing rather than a third-party summary.
What ShutEye actually does
ShutEye is a sleep-tracking app for iPhone and Android, built by Enerjoy, a Singapore wellness app developer whose other titles include JustFit, Me+ and Eato. The app is free to install and sells a Premium subscription on top.
The tracking works without any extra hardware. Per ShutEye's own FAQ, the app uses your phone's microphone and accelerometer to monitor movement and sound through the night, then reports how long you took to fall asleep and how the night split between light and deep sleep. Mattress Clarity's reviewer confirmed the setup in practice: a charged phone near the bed, nothing to wear.
Three features do most of the work for most subscribers. Snoring and sleep-sound recording saves clips you can play back in the morning. A smart alarm aims to wake you in your lightest sleep phase inside a window you choose. And a sound library covers rain, ticking clocks, crickets, ASMR tracks, relaxing music and bedtime stories, per the same expert review.
ShutEye also says it watches for irregular breathing, choking sounds and pauses, and will suggest seeing a professional if it sees them. The company has worked with sleep organisations on that content, including Ognomy in the US and Somnus Wellness in Singapore. Treat the output as a prompt to get checked, not as a diagnosis.
Four of ShutEye's web tools are free and need no account at all: a sleep calculator that works backwards from your wake time, a jet-lag recovery calculator, a streaming page of relaxing sounds, and a dream-meanings library. They are a fair way to sample the brand before you install anything.
What the ratings add up to
The volume side of the picture is clearly strong. Apple's listing shows 4.8 out of 5 from roughly 350,000 ratings, and Google Play shows 4.4 from about 109,000 reviews against more than 10 million installs. AppRundown, which ranks sleep apps on published data, logged 4.77 across 347,000 reviews and called that the second-highest rating in the category.
The expert read lines up with that. Mattress Clarity scored ShutEye 4.8 out of 5 and singled out the detail in the metrics, the comparison data that puts your numbers in context, and the fact that nothing has to be worn to bed.
| Source | Score | Sample behind it | As at |
|---|---|---|---|
| App Store (US) | 4.8 / 5 | about 350,000 ratings | 17 Oct 2026 |
| Google Play | 4.4 / 5 | about 109,000 reviews, 10M+ installs | 17 Oct 2026 |
| Mattress Clarity | 4.8 / 5 | one expert review | 16 Sep 2026 |
| AppRundown | 4.7 / 5 | 680,000 reviews, ranked 10th of 10 | 15 Jul 2026 |
| Trustpilot | 1.6 / 5 | 179 reviews | 17 Oct 2026 |
Where the sources disagree
That last row is the one worth sitting with. Trustpilot's 179 reviewers score ShutEye 1.6 out of 5, with 73% at one star, while nearly 460,000 app-store raters average well above four. Both numbers are real, and they are measuring different things.
App-store ratings are mostly collected in-app from people still using the product. Trustpilot tends to attract customers who went looking for somewhere to write about a billing or support problem, which is why its sample is a thousand times smaller and far more negative. We have weighted the compiled score towards the larger samples while letting the Trustpilot themes inform the sub-scores for billing and support.
The themes themselves are specific. On Trustpilot, customers most often write about being charged when they expected the trial to run first, and about how long it took to get a subscription cancelled. Others question how closely the sleep data matched their night, and some report that only two or three of a dozen or more flagged snoring clips contained actual snoring.
The same reviews carry the clearest argument for the app. One Trustpilot customer describes three nights of recordings making a problem obvious enough to pursue, which ended in a sleep apnoea diagnosis. That is the use case ShutEye is genuinely good at: giving you evidence to take to a doctor.
What you pay for Premium
ShutEye does not publish a price page, so the reliable numbers come from Apple's in-app purchase list, which we read on 12 October 2026. The standard rates are $9.99 for one month and $59.99 for one year, and Mattress Clarity quotes the same two figures.
Two promotional tiers sit alongside them on the in-app upgrade screen: a six-month plan at $19.99 and an annual plan at $29.99, exactly half the standard year. Both appear on a countdown and are not shown in every session, so the price you see depends on which upgrade screen you land on.
| Plan | Price | Works out at |
|---|---|---|
| Free app | $0 | Basic tracking only |
| 1 month | $9.99 | $9.99 a month |
| 6 months (promotional) | $19.99 | about $3.33 a month |
| 1 year (standard) | $59.99 | about $5.00 a month |
| 1 year (promotional) | $29.99 | about $2.50 a month |
Twelve monthly payments come to $119.88, so even the standard year halves the monthly rate. If the $29.99 screen appears, the annual plan lands below what Sleep Cycle charges, and well below the monthly route.
Regional pricing is lower in some stores. Indian coupon aggregator GrabOn lists ShutEye from Rs 233 a month and Rs 2,800 a year, validated in October 2026. That figure is aggregator-sourced rather than stated on a ShutEye page, so check what your own store shows.
A Family Plan exists and is managed from the Profile tab inside the app, per ShutEye's FAQ, which does not publish its price or how many members it covers. Gift cards and a lifetime plan are also sold, both confirmed by name in ShutEye's refund policy.
Where you buy changes what you can do later. Subscribe through the App Store or Google Play and the renewal lives in your own device subscription settings, where you can cancel it yourself in a few taps. Buy through ShutEye's web checkout and cancellation goes through its support team instead.
How the refund policy works
ShutEye publishes a detailed Money-Back Policy under Enerjoy Ltd., and it is worth two minutes before you subscribe. The headline is a 30-day full refund, and it applies to purchases made on ShutEye's own website rather than through the app stores.
It comes with conditions. You need to show you used the app: 20 days of tracking for a yearly plan, 15 for quarterly, 7 for monthly and 3 for weekly. You also need to cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date, and lifetime plans, gift cards, the Emotional Eating course and ShutEye workbooks are excluded.
Two regional rights sit on top. EEA and UK residents get a 14-day cancellation right without giving a reason, though the policy notes it does not apply if you consent to the subscription starting immediately, which is the default at checkout. California and Connecticut residents can cancel for a refund before midnight of the third business day after purchase.
If you bought through Apple or Google, the refund decision is theirs rather than ShutEye's. The FAQ says support will guide you through the right channel, and lists [email protected] with a stated 24-hour response time.
Will it work in your bedroom?
This is the question that decides the app, and it has a clear answer in the evidence. Because the tracking leans on the microphone, anything else making noise in the room gets folded into your data.
Mattress Clarity's reviewer found this directly: the app logged her bulldog's snoring as her own, and she concluded ShutEye is not the right pick for couples or for households with animals in the bedroom. Users raise the same point about partners.
Sleeping alone, in a quiet room, with the phone on the mattress or a bedside table, is the condition ShutEye was designed for. That is also where the strong ratings come from, so match your situation to it before you pay for a year.
One more practical point: there is no dedicated Apple Watch app. ShutEye integrates with Apple Health instead, so if you already own a Watch and want it to do the measuring, Pillow is the closer fit.
What works well, and what to check
What works well
- No wearable needed. Mattress Clarity confirms a charged phone near the bed is the whole setup.
- Detailed metrics, including time to fall asleep and the light and deep sleep split, with comparison data to put your numbers in context.
- Snoring clips you can play back, which several customers credit with giving them something concrete to show a doctor.
- A broad sound library covering rain, ticking clocks, crickets, ASMR, music and bedtime stories.
- Annual billing roughly halves the monthly rate, and the promotional annual tier halves it again.
- Four free web tools, including a sleep calculator and a jet-lag calculator, with no account needed.
What to know before you buy
- Set a calendar reminder for the sixth night of the trial. It rolls into a paid plan, and billing is the most common theme in the Trustpilot reviews.
- Subscribe through the App Store or Google Play if you want to manage cancellation yourself.
- If a pet or partner shares your room, expect their noise in your data, as the Mattress Clarity review found.
- Read the 30-day policy's tracking requirement before you buy on the website, and note the 24-hour pre-renewal cancellation window.
- Compare the $29.99 promotional annual screen against the standard $59.99 before committing to a year.
- Treat any apnoea signal as a reason to book a professional sleep assessment rather than a result.
If you remember four things
- Premium is $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year as standard, with promotional tiers at $19.99 for six months and $29.99 for a year.
- The 7-night trial is for first-time subscribers only and renews automatically.
- ShutEye measures a quiet, single-occupant bedroom well, and struggles when a partner or pet shares the room.
- The 30-day money-back guarantee covers website purchases and asks for proof you actually tracked your sleep.
Who ShutEye suits best
It fits you well if you sleep alone, suspect you snore, and want a few weeks of evidence without spending on a ring or a watch. The recording-and-playback loop is the strongest part of the product, and at the promotional annual price it costs less than a coffee a month.
It also suits anyone who wants sleep sounds and a smart alarm bundled with the tracking rather than paid for separately.
An alternative may suit you better in three cases: you share a bed, you already own an Apple Watch and want it to do the sensing, or you want a smart alarm and little else and would rather pay less for it.
Alternatives worth comparing
Sleep Cycle is the closest substitute and the cheaper one. It also analyses sound through the phone, and its premium runs from $2.99 a month or $39.99 a year including sleep aids and snore detection. Prefer it if the smart alarm is your main reason for installing anything, and AppRundown rates it 4.6 across 105,000 reviews.
Pillow is the Apple Watch pick. It reads sleep stages from the Watch's accelerometer and heart-rate sensors and charts REM, deep and light sleep, at $39.99 a year or a $39.99 one-off purchase. Prefer it if you already wear a Watch to bed, since AppRundown notes its lower 4.4 rating reflects iPhone-only users.
RISE takes a different angle, modelling sleep debt and circadian timing and pulling data from Apple Watch, Fitbit and Oura. Prefer it if you want coaching on when to sleep rather than a recording of last night, and note it is subscription-only.
ShutEye questions people ask
Is ShutEye free to use?
Yes, in part. The app is free to install on both stores, and ShutEye's FAQ confirms you can use some basic features without a subscription. Advanced sleep tracking, personalised insights and the full in-app sound library need Premium. Four web tools, including the sleep calculator and the jet-lag recovery calculator, are free with no account.
How long is the ShutEye free trial?
Seven nights, and ShutEye's FAQ limits it to first-time subscribers. Anyone who has previously held a premium plan will not see it. The trial converts to a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends, and there is no refund for unused trial days.
How do I cancel a ShutEye subscription?
If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, cancel in your device's subscription settings, the same place you manage every other app subscription. If you bought on ShutEye's website, the FAQ directs you to contact support at [email protected], which gives cancellation steps for your specific plan and states a 24-hour response time.
Does ShutEye need an Apple Watch or a fitness tracker?
No. It uses your phone's microphone and accelerometer, so a charged phone near the bed is the whole requirement. There is no dedicated Apple Watch app; ShutEye integrates with Apple Health instead.
Is ShutEye accurate if you share a bed?
Less so. The tracking listens to the room, so Mattress Clarity's reviewer found her dog's snoring recorded as her own and advised against the app for couples and pet owners. Users make the same point about partners. In a quiet single-occupant bedroom the reported accuracy is much better, and the research ShutEye cites places it in the 90th percentile of sleep trackers.
Can ShutEye detect sleep apnoea?
It looks for signs rather than diagnosing. ShutEye says it monitors irregular breathing, loud snoring, choking sounds and pauses, and will suggest a professional assessment if it finds them. Several customers credit it with surfacing a problem they then had diagnosed properly, so use it to gather evidence for a doctor.
Can I get a refund from ShutEye?
It depends where you bought. Website purchases carry a 30-day money-back guarantee, provided you cancel 24 hours before renewal and can show you tracked 20 days on a yearly plan, 15 on quarterly, 7 on monthly or 3 on weekly. EEA and UK buyers have a 14-day cancellation right, and California and Connecticut residents a 3-business-day one. App Store and Google Play purchases are refunded by Apple or Google.
Bottom line
Our compiled estimate is 7.4 out of 10, and we hold it with reasonable confidence: six named sources, nearly half a million app-store ratings, and one expert review that tested the thing properly. The product does one job well, which is turning a quiet night alone into playable evidence about your snoring and your sleep stages.
The two things that decide it for you are both checkable in advance. Whether your bedroom is quiet and single-occupant, and whether you will remember to cancel before the seventh night if the data does not tell you anything useful.
Start on the 7-night trial, buy through your app store so the renewal stays in your hands, and take the promotional annual screen over the standard one if it appears.
