Our verdict Good fit

Royal Brunei Airlines is a strong pick for travellers flying out of Bandar Seri Begawan: checked baggage is included on every fare, economy legroom on the 787 runs to 33 inches, and cabin crew is the most praised part of the product. Check Wi-Fi before you fly: it runs on selected A320neo services only.

How we made this estimate

We compiled this from six named third-party sources and Royal Brunei's own published pages between 12 and 13 October 2026, and we have not flown the airline ourselves. The source mix is one certification body (Skytrax), two rating platforms (AirlineRatings.com and Flight-Report), one named expert cabin review (Australian Frequent Flyer, June 2026), two verified-traveller rating pools (Tripadvisor and ProductReview.com.au), and the carrier's own fare, fleet, baggage, seat-selection and fee pages. Every price, allowance and fee below is quoted from one of those, and figures the sources did not cover are left out.

What Royal Brunei Airlines actually is

Royal Brunei Airlines is the national carrier of Brunei Darussalam, established on 18 November 1974 and wholly owned by the government. Its first flight departed on 14 May 1975. It is often called RB, and its flight code is BI.

Everything runs through one hub: Brunei International Airport at Bandar Seri Begawan. There is no network of regional bases, so RB competes on service and on a short home-airport transit rather than on frequency.

The fleet is small and modern. RB flies Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners on long-haul and Airbus A320neos on shorter routes. The airline's fleet page lists 18 Business seats at a 79-inch pitch reclining to fully flat beds on the 787-8, plus 52 Preferred Economy and 184 Standard Economy seats at an average 33-inch pitch. The A320neo carries 12 Business seats at a 43-inch pitch, 18 Preferred Economy and 120 Standard Economy at 30 to 32 inches. Power outlets and personal screens are fitted at every seat on both aircraft.

The route map covers four regions, from London Heathrow, Dubai, Melbourne and Tokyo Narita on long-haul to Hong Kong, Taipei, Beijing, Seoul, Jakarta, Surabaya and Balikpapan across the Asia Pacific. One route matters for anyone heading to the UK: RB flies non-stop between Bandar Seri Begawan and London Heathrow three times a week on BI003, departing 22:35 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and returning as BI004 on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Schedules are subject to change.

What every fare actually includes

This is where RB separates itself from the low-cost carriers serving the same region. Checked baggage is included on every fare to every destination, with the allowance stepping up by branded fare. We read the following off the airline's own baggage, seat-selection and fee pages on 13 October 2026.

A single piece may not weigh more than 32kg whatever the total allowance. Travelling as a group helps: if you are on the same flight and the same booking, RB lets you pool the total weight allowance across the party, which is the easy way to avoid an excess charge when one bag runs heavy.

Seat selection has a useful free window. Standard seat selection is complimentary on any fare type once online check-in opens 48 hours before departure, from whatever is left. Choosing earlier than that is chargeable on Super Saver, Saver and Value, and included on Flexi and in Business.

Sports gear is treated generously. Since 1 December 2025 sporting equipment counts inside the free baggage allowance rather than on top of it, and Royal Skies members get a further 12kg sporting-equipment waiver per guest on RB-operated flights. Equipment must stay within 255cm total dimensions, and waivers do not stack, so only the highest applicable one is applied.

What a seat from Brunei costs

RB publishes live fares on its Special Deals pages. These were the all-in economy fares showing on 13 October 2026 for departures from Bandar Seri Begawan, and they move with season and availability.

Surabaya (SUB)From BND242From BND372
Beijing (PKX)Not listedFrom BND520
Hong Kong (group of three)Not listedFrom BND551 per guest

The Hong Kong fare is a genuine group play rather than a solo one: BND551 per guest return including taxes and surcharges, requiring a minimum of three passengers travelling together for the entire journey, with travel between 14 October and 29 November 2026.

Independent pricing lines up with that picture. Australian Frequent Flyer's reviewer paid AUD$410 for a one-way Seoul to Melbourne ticket via Brunei in June 2026, including a 25kg baggage allowance and excluding seat selection, and described RB as an underrated option for Asia and UK routes on exactly that value basis.

Two extras have published prices worth planning around. Sky Lounge access at Brunei International Airport costs BND55 for an adult walk-in, dropping to BND45 if you prepay when booking, through Manage My Booking or at a local RB office; the child rate (ages 2 to 11) is BND45 walk-in or BND36 prepaid, and infants are free. Access runs to a maximum of three hours, then BND12 for each additional hour. Prepaid lounge access is non-refundable and non-transferable.

The second is connectivity. RB SkyConnect Wi-Fi is sold by package on selected Airbus A320neo flights: on flights under three hours, chat from USD1.99, browse and chat at USD4.99, and streaming at USD8.99. On longer flights those become USD2.99, USD8.99 and USD12.99. Video and voice calls are not available on any package.

Beyond the fare itself, RB runs a rotating set of offers on its own site rather than a standing sitewide discount. In October 2026 those included a flight discount tied to a Brunei running event, a complimentary one-night stay at the five-star Empire Brunei with a return Business Class ticket from selected origins, and a discounted KLIA Ekspres train fare for RB ticket holders connecting through Kuala Lumpur.

What travellers and raters say

Six sources, read between 12 and 13 October 2026, cluster around the same conclusion: a well-rated mid-size carrier whose cabin crew is its strongest asset.

SourceVerdict or scoreBasis
SkytraxCertified 4-Star AirlineAudited product and staff service
AirlineRatings.com7/7 safety, 5.5/7 product, 83.3% would recommend13 passenger reviews

Australian Frequent Flyer4/5 for 787 economyNamed expert cabin review, June 2026

ProductReview.com.au2.6/5143 reviews, Australian travellers

The crew scores stand out wherever a source breaks ratings down. Flight-Report's 16 reviewers score cabin crew 8.3 out of 10, cabin and seat comfort 7.8, entertainment and Wi-Fi 7.7, and meals and snacks 7.3. That ranking matches the airline's awards record: travel professionals and travellers voting in the World Travel Awards named RB Asia's Leading Cabin Crew 2026 at the Asia, Oceania and Indian Ocean ceremony on 27 September 2026, the airline's fifth Asia title in that category since 2020.

Safety is the least contested point. AirlineRatings.com awards RB a full 7 out of 7 for safety, the top band, alongside 5.5 out of 7 for product. Its small pool of 13 passenger reviews rates meals and beverages and overall value at 4.4 out of 7, seat and cabin space and customer service at 4.2, and in-flight entertainment lowest at 3.8. Skytrax certifies RB as a 4-Star Airline across seats, amenities, catering, entertainment, cleanliness and both cabin and ground staff.

Seat space earns consistent praise. Australian Frequent Flyer's reviewer measured 33 inches of pitch in standard economy on the 787 and 34 inches in Preferred Economy, called out the 3-3-3 layout, and noted the legroom runs ahead of what Qantas offers in the same cabin.

Where the sources disagree

The spread between platforms is wide, and the reason is worth knowing before you weigh it.

The two highest-scoring sources are the ones built on recent cabin reports: Flight-Report at 7.8 out of 10 and Australian Frequent Flyer at 4 out of 5, both drawing on specific flights described in detail. The lowest is ProductReview.com.au at 2.6 out of 5 across 143 reviews, a larger pool drawn almost entirely from Australian travellers on the Melbourne route. Platforms built around service feedback usually sit below platforms built around trip reports, and RB's Australian traffic is concentrated on one long-haul route with few rerouting options when something moves.

Entertainment splits by cabin rather than by platform. Flight-Report's pool scores entertainment and Wi-Fi 7.7, while AirlineRatings' pool puts in-flight entertainment lowest of its categories at 3.8 out of 7. The fleet explains it: screens are fitted at every seat on both aircraft types, while Wi-Fi is sold on selected A320neo services only. Australian Frequent Flyer's June 2026 787 flight had seatback screens with films, music and a moving map, and no Wi-Fi on board.

What works well, and what to check first

What works well

  • Cabin crew is the most praised element across every source that scores it, and the World Travel Awards cabin-crew title has now gone to RB five times in Asia since 2020.
  • Checked baggage is included on every fare to every destination, from 20kg up to 40kg in Business.
  • Economy pitch on the 787-8 averages 33 inches, which a named expert reviewer measured and rated above a direct competitor's.
  • Top-band safety rating of 7 out of 7 from AirlineRatings.com.
  • Power outlets and personal screens at every seat on both the 787-8 and the A320neo.
  • A free stopover in Brunei is available on connecting journeys, turning a layover into a short trip.

What to know before you buy

  • RB is a dry airline: no alcohol is served on board or in the lounge, and meals are halal. Named reviews confirm this on both long-haul and the ground product.
  • Wi-Fi is sold on selected A320neo flights only, so plan for an offline long-haul sector on the 787.
  • Cancellations are not handled through Manage My Booking. RB's own help pages direct you to your nearest RB office, so allow time if plans are uncertain.
  • Check the change rules before choosing on price alone: a date change on Super Saver is BND120 plus any fare difference, against BND40 on Value and free on Flexi.
  • Prepaid Sky Lounge access is non-refundable and non-transferable, and capped at three hours before an hourly charge applies.
  • Compare the per-route fare against the published Special Deals page, since the lead-in fare applies to selected routes and dates rather than the whole network. On 13 October 2026 the cheapest published fares were BND178 return to Balikpapan and BND222 one way to Jakarta.

Is Royal Skies worth joining?

For anyone flying out of Brunei more than once or twice a year, the published benefits make the free programme easy to justify.

The tiers carry real baggage and lounge value. Silver earns 50% bonus award miles and adds a complimentary 10kg extra baggage allowance, Sky Lounge access at Brunei International Airport, priority check-in and preferred seating when available at check-in. Elite Gold earns 100% bonus award miles, a complimentary 20kg extra baggage allowance, preferred seating for the member plus one guest, Business Class lounge access for two where available to RB guests, priority check-in and priority award redemption.

Miles redeem against more than reward seats. RB lists reward flights, Business Class upgrades, seat selection, extra baggage in one-way 5kg blocks, and Sky Lounge access at the Brunei hub, all subject to availability.

Family Plus is the feature worth knowing about. It combines miles from up to 11 family members into one account, covering a spouse, parents, parents-in-law and children aged 2 to 17, and the lead holder's spouse receives the same Royal Skies status at no additional cost. Everyone involved needs to be a Royal Skies member first.

Earning on the ground is covered too: the Royal Brunei Visa Platinum cards issued by Baiduri Bank earn 6 miles per BND10 spent and carry a four-year annual fee waiver, subject to the bank's approval. Members also get the extra 12kg sporting-equipment waiver, which is the most valuable perk of all if you travel with golf clubs, a bike or dive gear.

Who it suits best

RB is a good fit if you are based in Brunei or routing through Bandar Seri Begawan, value a generous baggage allowance over a rock-bottom base fare, and care more about crew service and seat space than about screens and connectivity. It also suits travellers who want a direct run to London Heathrow without a change of aircraft, and anyone travelling with sports equipment or as a family pooling allowances and miles.

It fits less neatly if staying connected in the air is non-negotiable on a long sector, if you need to cancel online rather than through an office, or if alcohol service is part of what you are paying for.

Alternatives worth comparing

  • Singapore Airlines or Scoot via Singapore. Consider these when you want the widest onward network and reliable inflight connectivity on long sectors, and you can accept a connection at Changi rather than a short hop from Brunei.
  • Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur. A reasonable comparison for Europe and Australia when KUL timings work better for your itinerary. RB sells a discounted KLIA Ekspres train fare to its own ticket holders, which narrows the ground-transfer gap if you connect through KL on RB instead.
  • AirAsia on regional routes. Worth pricing for short Southeast Asian hops when you are travelling light, since RB's advantage is strongest once a checked bag and a seat assignment are in the comparison.
Does Royal Brunei Airlines serve alcohol?

No. RB is a dry airline, and alcohol is not served on board or in its lounge. Meals are halal. A named expert review of a 787 economy flight in June 2026 confirmed this for both the cabin and the ground product.

How much baggage do you get on Royal Brunei Airlines?

Checked baggage is included on every fare to every destination, stepping up by branded fare: 20kg on RB Super Saver, 25kg on RB Saver, 30kg on RB Value and RB Flexi, and 40kg on Business Saver and Business. A single piece may not exceed 32kg, and travellers on the same flight and booking can pool their total allowance.

Does Royal Brunei Airlines have Wi-Fi?

RB SkyConnect Wi-Fi is sold on selected Airbus A320neo flights only, with chat packages from USD1.99. Video and voice calls are not supported, and the Boeing 787-8 long-haul fleet is not equipped.

Can you choose your seat for free on Royal Brunei?

Yes, within a window. Complimentary standard seat selection is available on any branded fare once online check-in opens 48 hours before departure, from the seats still available. Selecting earlier is chargeable on Super Saver, Saver and Value fares, and included on RB Flexi and in Business Class.

Is Royal Brunei Airlines safe?

AirlineRatings.com gives Royal Brunei a 7 out of 7 safety rating, its highest band, and Skytrax certifies the airline as a 4-Star Airline for its product and staff service. The fleet is made up of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners and Airbus A320neos.

Can you stop over in Brunei for free?

Yes, on selected city pairs. RB lets you break a connecting journey in Brunei at no fare cost for tickets purchased up to 31 December 2027, on one reservation per ticketed booking. The transit must be longer than 8 hours and no longer than 24 hours, and you need to request it at least five working days before arrival. Visa and stopover costs are yours, and Group, RB Super Saver and non-revenue bookings are excluded.

Bottom line

Our compiled estimate puts Royal Brunei Airlines at 7.5 out of 10, and we hold that with reasonable confidence: the certification and safety ratings are audited, the fares, allowances and fees come from the airline's own pages, and the one wide spread between platforms has a clear explanation. The product is service-led and baggage-generous, which is exactly what most travellers out of Bandar Seri Begawan are buying.

Book it for the crew, the 33 inches of economy pitch and the bag that is already in the price. Choose the branded fare on its change rules rather than its headline number, and treat the long-haul sector as offline time.
